The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Management Transition Follows Mixed Response
The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the need for a clearer direction.
The president stated that the developers is now overhauling the project with a renewed vision, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
This announcement mirrors a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the full content from the president's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just finished your meeting - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and creative developers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to persist.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the necessity for a clearer identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the feedback to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s poised to achieve its promise to our players.
Our confidence in this project grows every day. To boost the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the incoming Lead of 31st Union. After several months of talks, he starts with us on the specified date.
His management and background in the competitive gaming space is vast, having dedicated the recent years developing and managing some of the most well-known titles in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in receiving him soon. We are all excited to continue witnessing the development of Project ETHOS in the months to ahead.
David
