Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Police then found numerous other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests suggest the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; authorities are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the incident," they added.
Local authorities said they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.
An important representative said the vandalism rendered him speechless and needed to be solved quickly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist attack five years ago," he stated on online, referring to the murder of nine victims by a shooter focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
