RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our security, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
