Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of significant explosions rocking Tehran, amid statements from Israel that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Context: Escalating Tensions and Prior Developments
This event occurs against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the region. Major events preceding this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the region, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further talks planned.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as unfounded.
