The buzz surrounding The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team is likely building a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously flexible, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
