Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot starts when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
