End Clergy Abuse Global board members and survivors pose in St. Peter Square following the meeting with the Pontiff

People who endured sexual abuse by church officials have voiced renewed hope after their first meeting with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

The board president, heading the anti-abuse organization, stated that the Pope's choice to meet with them so soon in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to tackling the problem.

Global Strict Policy Pushed

The group is advocating for a worldwide strict approach that would permanently remove any clergy member who admits to or is found guilty of abusing a child. This approach has been implemented in the US.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "opposition in some parts of the world" to this initiative, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is resistance," Hickey remarked.

Inherited Issue

The new Pope, who assumed the position in May, has inherited this longstanding issue that has haunted the Catholic Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to resolve the situation included an unprecedented meeting on paedophilia within the institution and changes to canon law to clearly outlaw abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For the representative, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the policy is personal. The North American activist revealed they were abused by a priest who was subsequently moved between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his papacy, because we want to collaborate with him," they stated. "Both sides share the same goal, we want to end clergy abuse."

Historic Meeting

Multiple representatives of the organization, which represents survivors and advocates from over thirty countries, met with the Pope in his official residence.

The discussion, initially planned for a brief period, lasted to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was described as "very understanding" when hearing the account of a woman abused at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

Hickey added the Pope was "compassionate" about their own story and seemed "very humble, funny, and very down to earth."

"Victims have long wanted a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," they stated. "I felt like he was genuine, practical, and very open and eager to work with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The group is advocating that changes to canon law will enable the adoption of the strict approach globally.

They have consulted specialists and compiled documents that they will present to the pontiff.

"He appeared engaged in reviewing it," Hickey remarked.

Accountability Highlighted

A recent church-ordered document highlighted the "necessity of a efficient process for the resignation and/or removal of religious officials or personnel in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The document also pointed out that survivors repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for church leaders and senior officials to be made responsible for negligence and concealment."

Moving Forward

The representative shared they informed the Pope at the start of their meeting: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

After the encounter, Hickey voiced optimism for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, coming together and establishing a relationship and persisting to build that relationship is a move in the right direction," Hickey stated.

Hickey added that they shared with Pope Leo: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I believe like we can change how the narrative concludes - he valued that."
